Showing Which Teams Have Accomplished the Most — to Date

LSU Takes Over as #1

  • Through the first 12 weeks of the season, LSU has clearly accomplished the most of any team in the nation
  • There are relatively wide gaps between the teams at the top, with each team in the top-5 trailing the team immediately ahead of it by more than .015
  • As a result, #4 Arkansas's rating (.779) is closer to that of #15 USC (.727) than to that of #1 LSU (.836)
  • Oklahoma State, which leads all teams with 4 wins versus the current top-25 — and which has posted a 6-1 record versus the current top-30 (with 5 of those games on the road) — has accomplished the 2nd-most of any team to date
  • Alabama, which has only 2 wins versus the current top-30 but whose only loss is to #1 LSU, has accomplished the 3rd-most of any team to date — followed by #4 Arkansas, whose only loss is at Alabama
  • Kansas State, which has 3 wins versus the current top-25 and hasn't lost to a team ranked outside of the current top-10, has accomplished the 5th-most of any team to date
  • Iowa State, following its double-overtime upset of Oklahoma State in Ames, moves to #27
  • The BCS is a major reason why college football has the best regular season in all of sports, and this coming week will feature an abundance of top-flight matchups: #4 Arkansas at #1 LSU; #3 Alabama at #26 Auburn; #22 Notre Dame at #8 Stanford; #10 Houston at #29 Tulsa; #20 Clemson at #11 South Carolina; #13 Georgia at #30 Georgia Tech; #17 Penn St. at #24 Wisconsin; and #18 Texas at #23 Texas A&M

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's fifth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
