Showing Which Teams Have Accomplished the Most — to Date

Okla. St. and LSU Are Far and Away the Top 2

  • In terms of what they've accomplished through the first 10 weeks of the season, Oklahoma St. and LSU have clearly been the top-2 teams — the Cowboys and Tigers are within .005 of each other but are far ahead of the rest of the field
  • The teams from #3 to #6 (undefeated Boise St., 1-loss Alabama, undefeated Stanford, and 1-loss Oklahoma) are within .012 of each other but are separated by more than .030 from the teams above and below their grouping
  • The Big 12 has been the top conference (based on success in non-conference play), and all but one of its teams is currently ranked in the top-40
  • The SEC, 2nd in the conference rankings, is ahead of the 3rd-place conference by nearly .100
  • The BCS is a major reason why college football has the best regular season in all of sports, and this coming week will feature 5 more top-25 matchups: #10 Oregon at #5 Stanford; #22 Texas A&M at #12 Kansas St.; #13 Virginia Tech at #25 Georgia Tech; #23 Nebraska at #14 Penn St.; and #18 Auburn at #16 Georgia

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's fifth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
