Showing Which Teams Have the Best Win-Loss Records Considering Their Schedules—to Date

Wisconsin Is #1

Bowl Championship Splendor

  • The undefeated Badgers move into the top spot for the first time all season
  • Only 5 teams have winning records versus the current top-25 and no losses to teams ranked outside of the current top-25: #1 Wisconsin (3-0 vs. the current top-25); #2 UCF (1-0); #4 Georgia (2-1); #6 Penn St. (3-2); and #9 Ohio St. (3-2)
  • The top 12 teams are separated by just .059, compared with .110 at this point last year
  • #12 Auburn has a nation-leading 2 wins versus the current top-5 (both at home), but the Tigers don’t have a winning record versus the current top-25 (2-2) and haven’t beaten a current-top-35 team on the road
  • The only other teams in the top dozen that don’t have a win on the road versus the current top-35 team are the unbeaten teams—Wisconsin and UCF—and #8 Miami
  • Most of #11 Notre Dame’s games (7 of 12) have been against the current top-30, with most of those (4 of 7) being on the road
  • The top 4 conferences—the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Pac-12—are separated by just .036, and then there is a .065 gap before the Big 12 (which beats the American Athletic Conference by .022)

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's sixth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
