The Anderson & Hester/Seattle Times Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. they compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings—each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength;

2. they rank teams solely upon success in defeating quality opponents, rather than upon margins of victory;

3. in premiering after the season's 5th week, they reward actual accomplishments, not perceived potential;

4. they provide the most accurate conference ratings—each conference is rated according to its out-of-conference record and the difficulty of its out-of-conference schedule.
